Sakamoto-san Named 2005 Man of the Year

Takashi Sakamoto
NEW YORK - Takashi Sakamoto received the 2005 Ankh Award naming him The Copper Club's Man of the Year. The Ankh Award committee selected Mr. Sakamoto from among numerous nominations for the recognition based upon his years of devoted service to the industry and his role as chairman and representative director (recently retired) of Nippon Mining & Holdings, Inc. The award was presented at the club's annual dinner on February 15, 2005 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City.

Mr. Sakamoto introduced a new business model to Nippon Mining and led the way in investment and involvement with overseas mining projects, participation in international alliances and business globalization. He is further distinguished as the first Japanese executive to be so honored by The Copper Club in its 60-year history.

This year, The Copper Club recognized an industry that has consistently and substantially used copper metals in the manufacture of its products. This special Copper in Industry Award was presented to the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM), which represents the automotive industry worldwide. Mr. Ziad S. Ojakli, group vice president for corporate affairs of Ford Motor Company and chairman of AAM, along with Frederick L. Webber, AAM president and CEO, received the award in behalf of the industry.

Again, this year, four outstanding students were given $10,000 scholarships to support their pursuit of degrees in metals and mining. The awards are based on academic achievement and financial need. Contributions to the Club's Grant Program derive mainly from corporations with which our members are associated.
